Labor Day |
|
Labor Day in the United States is a federal holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the contributions of American workers to the nation's prosperity and development.
It originated in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, when workers faced long hours and poor conditions.
The first Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union.
Oregon was the first state to officially recognize Labor Day as a public holiday in 1887.
By 1894, thirty states celebrated Labor Day, and it became a federal holiday under President Grover Cleveland.
